Weichai, Yuchai, Shangchai, Perkins or Cummins: which engine?

A Chinese-built generator set is an engine, an alternator and a controller assembled on a base frame by the set maker. The engine is most of the cost and decides price, parts and service. These are the makes we quote most often.

Weichai, Yuchai, Shangchai (SDEC)

China's three largest diesel engine makers. They give the lowest price per kW, especially from 500 kW upward, with lead times of a few weeks. All three have service and parts networks in Africa, the Middle East and South-East Asia, though coverage varies by country. Check which one has a dealer near your site.

Cummins (China-built)

Chongqing Cummins and Dongfeng Cummins build Cummins engines in China. Parts and service are available almost everywhere, and many buyers already stock Cummins parts. Price per kW is higher than the Chinese makes, often by 30–60% at 1,000 kW and above.

Perkins

Perkins engines are imported by the set makers through authorised distributors, so every assembler pays a similar price and there is less room to negotiate. Perkins is common at small and mid sizes (10–500 kVA) and is often specified by buyers who already run Perkins fleets.
