Open frame, silent canopy or container: which generator build?

The same engine and alternator can be supplied in three builds. The choice affects noise, weather protection, fuel autonomy, shipping and price.

Open frame

Lowest price. For installation inside a generator room or a building that provides noise control and weather protection. Easiest to service. Noise around 95–105 dB(A) at 1 m.

Silent canopy

A steel sound-attenuated enclosure, usually with a base fuel tank, typically 70–80 dB(A) at 7 m. Standard for sizes up to about 500 kVA used outdoors, on construction sites, in rental fleets and near buildings. Adds roughly 10–25% to the price of a small set.

Containerised

For about 500 kW and above: the set is built into a 20 ft or 40 ft container with sound insulation, ventilation, lighting and often a fuel tank. Ships as a container, is secure on site and can be moved. Adds roughly 15–25% to the price of a 1,000 kW set.

Hot climates

For sites at 45–50 °C ambient, ask for a high-ambient radiator (rated for 50 °C). It costs a little more but prevents derating and overheating, and should be checked on every quote for Africa and the Gulf.
